GET THIS BOOK:

	* Meditation for Beginners by Jack Kornfield

This is by far the best intro to mindfulness meditation that I've read. By, far. It's only 90 pages and covers all the bases with minimal noise. It also includes a CD with six guided meditations that appear to be recordings from a class.

How to Meditate:

My reply to a Reddit question. I think this is the best I've written so I saved it.

Preparation:

	* Set a timer for 5 minutes. Later you can go longer but in the beginning 5 minutes is plenty.
	* Sit comfortably, but upright and preferably with minimal support. Chair or floor or cushion, what suits you. You can lie down but that often leads to napping rather than meditation.

FIXME

Started in February of 2016 according to Headspace's “Your Journey”. For the first three years I assume there were benefits, cause I kept at it, but I couldn't tell you what they were. I do credit meditation with helping me with a really rough work situation that ran through the second half of 2018. I know of a few specific instances where I felt a lot of anxiety and meditating helped me set that aside for a while.

What is Meditation?

It's a brain training technique. You sit comfortably and observe your breath. After a bit you'll notice that your mind has wandered and you're thinking about something that's not your breath. You let that thought go and return to watching your breath.

	* Sit and know that you're sitting (should link to something about being present)
	* Place your attention on your breath
	* Notice when your mind has wandered (it will, everyone's does).
 * (I'd like to use the word distracted to tie with the next line but I also like saying the mind wandered as that makes it clearer that the distraction is internal)

What's Meditation For?

It's for training the Monkey or the Elephant depending on which metaphor you like.

It trains the monkey by letting you practice:

	* Being Present - you are here and it is now and you know that.
	* Remembering - ...that you're supposed to be watching your breath when your mind has stopped doing that
